The Savannakhet Eco Guide Unit was established in 2005 and since then has provided treks and tours to thousands of individuals from all over the world. However our commitment to the local destination goes beyond simple helping others experience what we love so much, but we strive to help the local communities we work with develop and improve their livelihoods. With the support of the Dutch development organization SNV we have put in place a number of measures to help ensure the sustainable development of both our organization and the communities we work with.
From October 2005 to October 2009, through taking tours to villagers, Savannakhet EGU has spent in excess of USD32,000 directly in the villages we work with – primarily going to the poor. We also hold annual meetings with each village to ensure that their needs are being met as well as our own, and have also run numerous training courses on tourism awareness and hygiene for the villagers.
